This is Bear 909, an Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear and her 2 Coy(yes they will turn brown). This encounter happened at Brooks Falls, Katmai NP, AK…DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INTERACT WITH ANY BEAR IN THIS MANNER-EDUCATE YOURSELF WITH THE APPROPRIATE BEAR SAFETY PROTOCOL FOR THE TYPE OF BEAR YOU ARE DEALING WITH. When you arrive at Brooks camp, you are escorted into Bear School. You are taught to maintain a distance of 50yards of any bear you see in the distance. During a close encounter, you are to use your voice in a calm tone and speak to the bear. The bears here have been habituated/conditioned over the years to respond accordingly to the human voice and recognize you as no threat. NEVER RUN‼️This will trigger the bears predatory instinct. You are to slowly back away. Close encounters are very common at Brooks and the trails are highly trafficked with families/kids. Brooks has an established high safety record (much better than car crashes). These bears do not see us as a threat due to their abundance of salmon/food source and have developed a high tolerance for humans. Many view them on explore.org live cams. However, these bears are still wild animals and can respond defensively if provoked, surprised or threatened. You should always talk and walk in groups on the trail to avoid surprise. OUR SPECIFIC ENCOUNTER: 909 was on her way to the falls and she came around the blind corner. Usually the bears run off trail but sometimes they want to use the trail and you must step off and give them the right away. iPhone on zoom, we managed to step off trail about 12-15ft until we hit a tree. The terrain did not allow for a further safe retreat as the cracking tree branches, noise/movement from attempts to step back into the tree was alarming the Coy so we stopped and let them pass. I felt that one voice was best and honestly never really felt she would harm us. WHEN SAFELY POSSIBLE, ATTEMPT TO SLOWLY STEP FURTHER BACK. REMEMBER THIS IS NOT AN INLAND GRIZZLY! Do your own research and always carry bear spray and know how to use it when around inland grizzlies.
