It all began when a group of hyenas approached from the western side of camp, using the boardwalk as they often do to cross the channel on their way to their den on the eastern side. At the same time, two sub-adult lions were coming from the opposite direction, also intending to use the boardwalk. The two predators met in the middle, and neither was willing to give way. The young lions stood their ground, lying low and growling loudly as the tension escalated. Moments later, an adult male lion charged in from nearby after hearing the commotion. He came in at full speed, scattering everything in his path. The hyenas immediately retreated, knowing they were no match for the powerful male, while the young lions also moved aside as he took control of the situation. In the chaos, one hyena leapt over the gate into the lodge’s main area, causing understandable panic among some of our guests. Fortunately, hyenas naturally avoid close contact with people, and after a brief moment, it turned back, jumped off the boardwalk, and disappeared beneath the deck before making its escape. The male lion remained nearby for a short while, roaring repeatedly as he disappeared into the bush, making his presence and dominance known. Although it was an intense and unforgettable encounter, everyone remained calm in the end, and, most importantly, all our guests and staff were safe with no injuries. It was one of those rare moments that reminds us just how wild, unpredictable, and extraordinary life in the African bush can be.

In the poverty-stricken favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, two young men choose different paths. Rocket (Phellipe Haagensen) is a budding photographer who documents the increasing drug-related violence of his neighborhood. José “Zé” Pequeno (Douglas Silva) is an ambitious drug dealer who uses Rocket and his photos as a way to increase his fame as a turf war erupts with his rival, “Knockout Ned” (Leandro Firmino da Hora). The film was shot on location in Rio’s poorest neighborhoods.
