MIAMI, Florida — August 10, 2026 — Courtney Clenney, 30, pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter with a deadly weapon in the April 3, 2022, stabbing death of her boyfriend, Christian “Toby” Obumseli, 27, at their Miami condominium. Under a negotiated agreement, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Andrea Ricker Wolfson sentenced Clenney to six years in prison followed by five years of probation. She received credit for time already served since her August 2022 arrest and is expected to serve roughly two additional years. Clenney originally faced a second-degree murder charge. Prosecutors alleged that she fatally stabbed Obumseli during an altercation inside their Edgewater residence. Clenney previously maintained that she acted in self-defense, telling investigators that she threw a knife at Obumseli after he allegedly attacked her. The medical examiner determined that Obumseli died from a stab wound and classified the death as a homicide. The plea agreement reduced the charge from second-degree murder to manslaughter with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony carrying a maximum sentence of 30 years. The agreement avoided a trial that had been scheduled to begin later in August. In July 2021, Clenney was arrested in Las Vegas on a domestic-battery allegation involving Obumseli after police said she admitted throwing a glass during an argument. The charge was later dropped. Investigators also documented disputes between the couple in Texas and Miami before Obumseli’s death. In February 2022, surveillance footage captured Clenney striking Obumseli inside their condominium building. Clenney was arrested in Hawaii on August 10, 2022, and extradited to Florida to face the murder charge. She later pleaded not guilty to an additional charge involving interception of wire communications. The Obumseli family attended Monday’s hearing. Prosecutors said the family had been consulted about the plea agreement.
