On May 1, 2026, around 5:00 a.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Division responded to a reported hot prowl burglary at a residence in the 7600 block of South Normandie Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found suspect Fredrick Spells engaged in a struggle with a family member in a bedroom doorway over a knife. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon and the deployment of a less-lethal force option, the struggle continued. Officers then fired, striking Spells. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries
