SWAT COP TAKES OUT KIDNAPPING SUSPECT Why do we talk about training so much? Because one day, you might be the one who shows up when someone desperately needs help. Backstory: On August 29, 2026, Metro Nashville Police responded to a series of incidents involving 54-year-old Jason William Sexton, who authorities said was armed with a full-size sword. Police said the incident began around 8 a.m. at a Shell market on Charlotte Avenue, where Sexton allegedly argued with a clerk over payment for coffee. He left, then later returned carrying a sword and allegedly threatened to kill the clerk. Police obtained a felony aggravated assault warrant. About an hour later, a relative called 911 and told police the family believed Sexton was a danger to others and had recently posted videos displaying the sword. A police helicopter located his Hyundai and tracked it to Cheshire Drive. Sexton exited the vehicle holding the sword while a 26-year-old woman remained inside. Police spent more than an hour attempting to persuade him to surrender. During the standoff, the woman told officers she was being held against her will. SWAT officers responded and developed a plan to take Sexton into custody. At approximately 11:25 a.m., SWAT Officer Joshua Baney fired three rounds at Sexton while he was holding the sword. Sexton was transported to Skyline Medical Center, where he died. The woman was not injured. Police said officers had also been trying to arrest Sexton since the previous day on warrants for alleged violations of an order of protection and criminal trespassing. He had reportedly fled during an earlier attempted apprehension. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, while Metro Nashville Police is conducting a separate administrative investigation. Baney, a 12-year MNPD veteran, was relieved of police authority pending the investigation.
