On April 20, 2026, Anderson County deputies conducted a traffic stop involving 32-year-old Austin Derrell Robertson. According to investigators, Robertson was detained and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle while deputies continued their investigation. When a second deputy arrived, Robertson managed to get out of the patrol car, leading to a physical struggle with both deputies. Deputies deployed Tasers in an attempt to gain control but Robertson broke away and returned to his vehicle, where he retrieved a firearm. Investigators say Robertson then shot Deputy Alex Albrecht in the chest. Despite suffering a serious gunshot wound, both deputies returned fire, striking Robertson. Robertson was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputy Albrecht was airlifted to the hospital, underwent multiple surgeries, and later recovered enough to be released from the hospital. Authorities stated he survived in part due to his protective equipment.
