Two SWAT officers were shot while executing a search warrant in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on June 2, 2026, when a convicted felon opened fire as officers breached the door. One officer was critically wounded after being struck in the femoral artery, while a second officer was struck in the helmet. A third officer immediately returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect. The suspect, 52-year-old Donald Gardner, had an extensive criminal history. In 1993, he committed a killing that resulted in nearly 19 years in prison. He was later sentenced to 18 years for drug and firearms offenses before being paroled in October 2023. In 2025, Gardner received five years of probation in connection with another drug case. Both wounded officers survived.
