They would rather face the end together than live in the deep alone. When a single pilot whale gets sick and wanders into dangerously shallow water, the rest of the pod does not abandon it to save themselves. Hundreds of them will follow the sick member into the shallows, huddling together, touching fins, and calling out. They will literally risk stranding themselves on the beach rather than swim away into the safe, open ocean without their family. In a world that constantly tells us to leave people behind in order to move forward, the pilot whale teaches us the heaviest truth of all: Some bonds are so deep that survival means absolutely nothing if you have to do it alone.
